The quick verdict

Full verdict ↓

Great for Big family get-togethers: it takes 4 to 20 players, and a new player picks it up in a minute

Think twice if You want strategy: there's very little to plan, it's all about reading the room

How we rate it

Learning curve. Write an answer, match the crowd. The only rule to remember is the Pink Cow, so it sits with UNO and Jenga at 1.

Luck & skill. There's no planning ahead. Knowing your group helps you guess the popular answer, but a lot depends on how the room happens to think that day.

Interaction. Every round is about everyone else's answers, and the reveal usually sparks a debate about whether two answers really match.

Set-up. Pop the paddock together, put the cows and the Pink Cow in it, hand out answer sheets and something to write with, and pick a Question Wrangler.

Reading. One player reads each English question aloud, and everyone writes a short answer every round.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is Herd Mentality right for you?

Great if

  • Big family get-togethers: it takes 4 to 20 players, and a new player picks it up in a minute
  • Mixed ages: there's no right answer to know, and young children can team up with an adult
  • An ice-breaker with new friends, colleagues or the in-laws, because the answers start conversations
  • A short, noisy game to fill the gap before dinner at a Diwali party or a cousins' night

Skip it if

  • You want strategy: there's very little to plan, it's all about reading the room
  • There are only two or three of you: it needs at least four, and it's better with more
  • Some of your players can't or don't want to write: everyone jots down an answer every round

A place on the honours list

Good company to be in.

How Herd Mentality plays

Put together the cardboard cow paddock and fill it with the cow tokens and the squishy Pink Cow. Everyone gets something to write on. One player, the Question Wrangler, reads out the questions and keeps the game moving, but still plays.

  • Time to teach: about 2 minutes.
  • Reading and language: The questions are in English, but only the player reading them out needs to read. Everyone writes a short answer each round, so players need to be able to write a word or two. Answers can be in Hindi or any language, as long as the whole group agrees beforehand, because answers have to match to score.

The full explanation: how a game of Herd Mentality goes

Each round the Wrangler reads a card, for example 'What's the best sauce?'. Everyone writes an answer in secret, then all reveal at once. Everyone who wrote the most popular answer takes a cow. If two answers tie for most popular, nobody scores that round.

If exactly one player's answer matches nobody else's, that player takes the Pink Cow. They can keep winning cows, but they can't win the game while the Pink Cow is in front of them. It only moves on when someone else becomes the lone odd one out.

The first player to collect 8 cows without holding the Pink Cow wins. If two players reach 8 in the same round, keep playing until one is a cow ahead. Tip: with young children, let them team up with a grown-up, and simply skip any question your group won't relate to.

Earlier boxes differ: a 2024 rules guide lists 160 question cards, 52 cow tokens (38 worth one cow and 14 worth three), 2 answer pads, the Pink Cow and the paddock. Pencils aren't in the contents list, so keep a few pens handy.

About the editions

Herd Mentality is made by Big Potato, a British company; it isn't made in India and there's no Indian edition, so copies sold here are imported. Our Amazon.in link goes to a listing that names Big Potato, for the Herd Mentality main game.

Before you choose

  • The box should carry the Big Potato logo and the black-and-white cow design
  • Inside you should find a squishy pink cow, a cardboard cow paddock, cow tokens and answer pads
  • The current box has 200 questions (on 100 double-sided cards) and 62 cow tokens; older boxes have 160 question cards and 52 cow tokens
  • Big Potato's current main-game box carries barcode 5060579761936 (item HMDTC01UK)
  • A set of cards with no squishy cow or paddock, or a box without Big Potato's name, is not the publisher's game

What reviewers and players say

UK reviewers call Herd Mentality simple, fast and a little bit bonkers: the rules take a minute, and guessing what everyone else will write turns even silly questions into real decisions. Family reviewers found it works across ages; in one review a 9-year-old and a 12-year-old played on equal terms with adults, and in another, children of four and six joined in by teaming up with grown-ups. One reviewer also played it over a video call. The complaints are small: the answer sheets are paper and get used up, and some questions refer to things young children won't know.

What people love

  • The rules are so simple that new players pick it up at once
  • Trying to think like the herd makes every question a real decision
  • It works across ages, and younger children can join as part of a team
  • Quick to set up, and 200 questions keep it fresh

Common complaints

  • The answer sheets are paper, so they run out over time
  • Some questions refer to things younger players won't know

Questions people ask about Herd Mentality

Is Herd Mentality available in India?

Yes. It is made by Big Potato, a British company, and sold in India as an imported game; there is no Indian edition. Our Check price on Amazon.in button goes to Big Potato's Herd Mentality main game.

How many people can play Herd Mentality?

Big Potato says 4 to 20. It works with four, but it's more fun with six or more, when there's a real herd to match and more chances for someone to land the Pink Cow.

Is Herd Mentality suitable for kids?

The box says 10 and up. One family reviewer had a four-year-old and a six-year-old join in by teaming up with adults, but a few questions refer to things young children won't know, so skip those.

Can we play Herd Mentality in Hindi?

The question cards are in English, but only the reader has to read them. Answers can be written in Hindi or any language, as long as everyone agrees beforehand, because only matching answers score.

What is the Pink Cow in Herd Mentality?

It's the penalty piece. If you are the only player whose answer matches nobody else's, you take the Pink Cow and can't win while you hold it. You pass it on when someone else becomes the lone odd one out.
